Three deaths and 40 new COVID-19 cases recorded

The Ministry of Health today recorded and additional 3 COVID-19 related deaths, this takes the number of deaths to 35.

Also, four of the country’s 10 administrative regions accounts for the 40 new COVID-19 cases. The Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region accounts for 22 of the forty new COVID-19 cases, followed by Region 4 with 14 cases and Regions 3 and 7 with 2 cases each.

Region 4, Demerara Mahaica currently has a total of 402 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

Ten persons are currently in the COVID-19 ICU, 96 persons are in institutional isolation and 407 persons are on approved home isolation. Guyana’s total COVID-19 cases are now at 1,180.

The Caricom bloc of 15 nations has more than 19,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases and in excess of 400 deaths. The Caricom country with the highest number of COVID-19 cases and deaths is Haiti. The island which has a population of 11.12 million has more than 8000 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 200 deaths.

Guyana’s, Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo Region shares a border with neighboring Brazil which currently ranks second in the world with COVID-19 cases and deaths. Brazil at the moment has more than 3.6 million cases and in excess of 116,000 deaths.

The United States of American has the highest number of cases and deaths. The US has more than 5 million confirmed cases and in excess of 183, 000 deaths.

The respiratory infection was first detected in China last year and in March of the World Health Organisation classified the virus as a pandemic. Guyana recorded its first confirmed case and death on March 11.
