Lewis said he speaks without fear or favour as usual and he will continue to do what he has been doing all the years. He said today we have come full circle and that those who were in opposition are now in opposition again. Lewis said the Opposition PPP said that Sugar can be saved and at the same time refused to make public the plan to save it.
Lewis was speaking at an anti-sugar reform rally and march at Albion/Port Mourant, Berbice on Tuesday. He told sugar workers that the sugar industry has been in crisis for decades and did not have the benefit of a good plan of action to revitalize the corporation or further the diversification programme implemented in the 1970s.
Sugar workers and their unions are objecting to the closure of the estates announced by the Government.
Lewis also told Sugar workers that the Jagdeo government allowed the Bauxite industry to go by ignoring the entries for rights of workers to be respected. He called on workers to demand that this APNU-AFC government take on board a consultative team and put in place a plan that can sustain the workers.
