A 47-year-old taxi driver and father of 6 was charged with the murder of Richard Ishmael School teacher, Kescia Branche.
The suspect, Matthew Munroe appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann Mc Lennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court this afternoon to answer to the indictable charge. Branche succumbed to her injuries days after she was found unconscious at the corners of Princess Street and Louisa Row, Georgetown back in November.
Munroe was expressionless as he walked into the courtroom to answer the charge in the presence of members of the major crimes unit of the Guyana Police Force.
He was remanded to prison until January 9th, 2018. Police prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that the file has to go back to the DPP for the chambers to complete outstanding work. Munroe was arrested just as he arrived in Guyana from the United States. The police had already detained his car as the probe intensified into the teacher’s murder. Attorney at law, George Thomas represented the accused and he told the court that his client was beaten and give a statement to sign, which he refused to sign.
The dreadful demise of the teacher sent shockwaves through the public education system with calls for the police to do a thorough investigation in the matter. Branche reportedly left a nightclub in the presence of two police constables who were both placed under close arrest and questioned as the probe intensified. The police also detained the father of the woman’s child but they were all released.
