Rastafari Council plans to protest Amendments to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control (Amendment) Bill of 2021

Come tomorrow the Rastafari Council will lead a protest outside of the office of the President against aspects of the bill that they feel have not addressed their concerns.

Removal of  custodial sentences for persons in possession of 30 grams or less of cannabis Amendments to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control (Amendment) Bill of 2021 were passed on Monday evening in the National Assembly, paving the way for the removal of custodial sentences for persons in possession of 30 grams or less of cannabis.

The council points out that the bill is draconian, and doesn’t  recognise the use of cannabis as part of the Religion of Rastafari.

Doesn’t grant amnesty for those already in prison for small amounts, doesn’t grant access for medicinal use.

Doesn’t expunge the criminal records of those previously charged for Cannabis.

Doesn’t allow users to plant their supply in the privacy of their homes.

Will fine the users $250,000 or US$1300 plus 3yrs in prison for failing or refusing to do Counseling or Community Service.
