Police Corporal Derwin Eastman and constable Jermine Williams were this afternoon jointly charged with the murder of Popular Berbice car park vendor Godfrey Scipio called “Saga”. Saga was killed on October 12th in the vicinity of the Sunset View Hotel at Stanley Place Kitty. The men appeared before magistrate Judy Latchman to answer to the indictable charge and were remanded to prison until December 5th before chief magistrate Ann McLennan to resign the case.
Attorney at law Nigel Hughes represented Eastman, while Dexter Todd represented Williams. Both attorneys asked the magistrate that the men be placed in protective custody since their lives could be in jeopardy if there are placed among hardcore criminals, many of whom the men played an instrumental role in placing behind bars.
Outside of the court room scores of persons gathered in shock and disbelief, while relatives and colleagues of the policemen seemed surprised.
Eastman prior to being charged maintained his innocence of the crime, he also called for a confrontation with the murder suspect who has implicated him. The Former Best Cop and a member of the intelligence arm of the Force professed his innocence of the allegations.
