Today makes it one year since the body of Corentyne carpenter Faiyaz Narinedat was discovered on the Corentyne Highway at a scene which appeared to be that of a hit and run accident. It was later revealed that the father of two was murdered and his body dumped to stage the crime scene.
The dead man’s wife Pooja Devi Pitam says the death anniversary of her husband comes with the family still holding on to hope for justice. She is filled with tears daily as she listens to her little daughter attempting to say “dada”. She is even more saddened by the reality that he will not be able to experience and share a bond with his youngest child who he never got to see.
Five men are before the court in the high-profile murder case and the alleged mastermind Marcus Bisram is awaiting extradition back to Guyana to face the murder charge. Bisram’s mother, Sharmilla Inderjali and Maryann Lionel, who is the daughter of one of the accused are also before the court for allegedly attempting to bribe a police sergeant with $4M for their release. They were both charged and placed before the court.
After one year only three witnesses have taken the witness stand after the Preliminary Inquiry had to be restarted following corruption allegations in the Berbice judicial system.
Meanwhile, Justice Gino Persaud struck out the order made in September which sought to prevent the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Chief Magistrate and the Commissioner of Police from continuing the charge of murder against the wealthy New York-based businessman. This means that police prosecutors can continue with the case against Bisram.
