The Georgetown Mayor and City Council will be closing all municipal markets effective from Saturday, April 4, 2020, as it continues to implement temporary measures to put an end the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
A public notice issued by the Municipality’s Markets Department on Thursday stated that all markets and street vending operations must cease from Friday, April 3, 2020, at 7pm.
The new rule applies to persons vending on the road or streets; including wholesalers, retailers, farmers and cookshop operators, among others, as authorized under sections 3(1) and 302 (31) (d) of the Municipal and District Councils Act, Chapter 28:01.
According to the statement, farmers, wholesalers/retailers will be permitted to ply their trade at the west of the Guyana Fire Service building at Stabroek Market and the Merriman’s Mall between Orange Walk and Light Street at Bourda Market.
This operation will only be on Fridays from 7am to 1pm and will be conducted under strict guidelines; to practise social distancing.
It was also noted that Sunday Street/Road selling will NOT be permitted at the Albouystown market.
Mayor of Georgetown Pandit Ubraj Narine in an invited comment told DPI that the Council continues to consult with the relevant stakeholders for the speedy implementation of measures which will benefit every citizen.
“The Council is acting swiftly and continues to work in the best interest of our residents and together we hope to combat this life-threatening disease,” Mayor Narine said.
