Rachel Narine, 19 and her mother, Kavita Persaud both of Ramsingh Street, Annandale, East Coast Demerara were jointly charged with having 2.660 kilograms of cocaine in their possession for the purpose of trafficking on February 14th at CJIA. The teenager was an outgoing passenger scheduled to travel to the USA when she was busted with the concealed drug in her handbag.
The two women appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and denied the charge. Their attorney, Everton Lammy-Singh made an unsuccessful application for bail for his clients. CANU Prosecutor, Konyo Sandiford told the court the drug was found in a false wall in the bag. He said a further investigation was done and Narine’s mother along with a taxi driver who drove them to the airport were also arrested and taken to CANU headquarters.
Sandiford noted that both the mother and daughter while in custody gave confession statements to CANU Officers and also provided detailed information on the drugs and how it got into the bag.
The Magistrate after listening to the prosecution’s address remanded the duo to prison until February 22nd
