The woman confessed to trafficking cannabis and was slapped with an 8-month jail sentence when she appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Sandra Russel, a 53-year-old vendor was busted with the drug on June 25th at Omai Landing, Port Kaituma the court was told. The woman had 70 grams of cannabis in her possession for the purpose of trafficking. She was jailed and fined $135,000.
Russel told the court “I don’t normally sell narcotics” as she explained that she worked at a mining camp in Omai and was not being paid, so she sold the drugs to earn a living.
However, Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield said the Police acting on information received sent ranks from the Mahdia Police Station to the mining camp where Russel stayed.
The ranks searched the woman’s room and found a black plastic bag hanging on the wall. The bag was searched and several ziploc bags with the drugs were found inside.
