The Guyana Defense Force is today investigation several allegations of sexual assault leveled against some of it ranks. The GDF in a press statement said recent investigations of misconduct and breaches of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by some of Officers at Base Camp Ayanganna. The GDF said it learned of an allegation of possible sexual assault by one of its officers against another. Given the nature and seriousness of the allegation, the matter was reported to the Guyana Police Force which has undertaken an investigation.
According to the release, the GDF is committed to a full and thorough investigation into this matter and to ensuring that all ranks found culpable for any other misconduct or breaches of SOPs are disciplined in full accordance with the Defence Act and Force Regulations.
The army has said that it recognises that the recent allegations of sexual assaults against its ranks require immediate strategies beyond its current training regimen. This will specifically and directly address such deviant behaviours by some within the organisation. it is said that in this regard, the force intends to solicit the necessary expertise in crafting and implementing a strategy aimed at holistically addressing the issue.
