Former GDF officer’s trial to commence June 27th

The preliminary inquiry into the murder of Reona Payne, committed by her partner former Guyana Defence Force captain, Orwain Sandy will commence on June, 27th.
The decision was made by Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court today.
Magistrate Latchman this morning called for the additional statements, however, police prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves did not have the documents.  This was despite the Magistrate giving the prosecution a week’s adjournment to file the three additional statements.
“Unfortunately the three outstanding statements are not yet available from the prosecution” Magistrate Latchman told Sandy in court.
The Magistrate said “We have to make a start”  as he ordered the prosecutor to have his witnesses ready for the commencement of the PI on the next occasion, with or without the three additional statements.
When the matter was last called, Sandy’s attorney James Bond, told the court that they had managed to send the psychiatric report done by Dr. Bhrio Harry to their own independent psychiatrist for evaluation overseas, but due to flight arrangements, the psychiatrist could not make it to court.
On May 2nd, Dr. Harry deemed Sandy mentally fit to stand trial in court for the murder of Payne.
The attorney requested that statements be filed for the matter to proceed in court, since he would be having their own psychiatrist to testify as a witness during Sandy’s defence.
Payne was shot 14times about her body in broad daylight and died on the spot on March 31st in First Street, Alexander Village.
