The accident occurred a short distance away from the Den Amstel Police Station and about 200 meters away from the brothers home at fellowship West Coast Demerara.
The Police have since detained the drivers of the two mini-buses involved in the accident. Dead are Sherman West, 28 and his 19-year-old brother Shalum Allen. Both men were pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
According to the police, their Investigations revealed that mini bus # BVV 8882 which was proceeding east along the northern side of the road stopped to put off passengers, West was towing his younger brother on a bicycle proceeding in the said direction, but behind BVV 8882.
The Police added that as West (deceased) was in the process of passing BVV 8882, the bus suddenly drove off and its right front side collided with the left handle bar of the bicycle; as a result of the impact the cyclist and his brother (Allen) fell onto the southern carriageway of the road and were struck by mini- bus BVV 7042 which was proceeding in the opposite direction.
At the family’s home today their foster father, Philip Hudson said the men were returning home from visiting a friend.
Hudson believes that speeding was the cause of the accident.Both mini-buses are lodged at the Den Amstel Police station as the police continue the probe into the accident.
