A suspected bandit was shot dead and another injured, during a failed robbery attempt on a businesswoman on the railway Embankment, just outside the access road to the Giftland Mall. The man was later identified as ex-prison officer Troyden Munroe. This newscast understands that the man was dismissed from the Prison Service back in March of this year for neglect of duty and general misconduct. Munroe is said to be from Canje East Berbice.
This newscast understands that the businesswoman was trailed by the men from the Eugene Corriea Airport in Ogle.
There are reports that the men pounced on the woman who had stopped to buy plantain chips at the bus shed on the Railway Embankment Road and Giftland Mall Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that an alert security officer who was escorting the woman, observed the vehicle stopping right in front of their vehicle and immediately became suspicious of the men, who attacked the vehicle causing the security officer to open fire on them.
One of the suspected bandits died on the spot, while the other man managed to flee the scene and turned up on foot at the Georgetown Hospital. There are reports that a white car dropped him off on East Street and he walked to the hospital with his injuries.
Police investigators converged at the hospital trying to get bits and pieces of information from the other suspect, who is now in custody, but the man denies knowing the dead man who is still to be identified.
The police source told this newscast that the suspect was shot multiple times about his body.
An investigation is in progress.
