A fugitive from justice in the United States was today ordered to be extradited to the to a face murder charge. Troy Anthony Thomas who was facing extradition proceeding was told that he would be extradited to the US when he appeared in the Providence Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus.
Thomas was represented by attorneys-at-law Nigel Hughes, Bernard Da Silva and Darren Wade. Thomas’ attorneys were arguing the point that defendant’s name was not Troy Anthony Thomas but Marvin Williams. However, the magistrate in her ruling said that the defendant signed police and court documents as Troy Thomas and answered to the name Troy Thomas in Court. The Magistrate said that the date of birth on US Court documents and those locally were the same.
Additionally, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus made reference to the extradition treaty signed between the United States and the United Kingdom in 1931 prior to Guyana gaining independence. The treaty is still recognised by the United States. The Magistrate also made mention of the extradition proceeding against US-based Guyanese Marcus Bisram. Bisram who is wanted for the murder of a Corentyne Carpenter is now awaiting extradition.
According to the magistrate, the final say in the matter of Thomas’ extradition now rests with Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan.
Thomas was arrested in January of this year in an intelligence-led operation by the police. Thomas is accused of killing Keith Frank in 201. An arrest warrant was issued for him after he fled the US.
