Coalition condemns arrest of talk show host by police

Opposition Leader Joseph Harmon on Thursday said the Coalition condemned the arrest of talk show host, Gavin Matthews.

Matthews was last evening released on $100,000 station bail after he was detained and questioned for allegations that he caused Sport Minister Charles Ramson Jr. emotional distress and humiliation. Allegations were also put to him for President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharat Jagdeo.

Harmon in a release said the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) continues to wantonly use the Guyana Police Force as a political weapon to target and persecute citizens who challenge their thin-skinned leaders.

He said too that the regime is sending a clear message through the arrest of Matthews, that it does not tolerate any criticism or being held accountable and those who attempt to do so will be targeted and severely punished.
