Bartica businesswoman shot by ex-partner during failed murder attempt

Woman miner, businesswoman Avia Abrams escaped death and was shot in the hand last night by her ex-partner who is also a licensed firearm holder.
 The woman had just closed her business place at Beachfront, 3rd Avenue and was sitting in her car when the man with a towel over his face pounced on her.
 There are reports that the man placed a gun to the woman’s head and threatened to kill her during the ordeal, the gun went off but the bullet struck Abrams in the hand. Prior to the shooting, the suspect had reportedly slashed the woman’s car tyres.
This newscast understands that the couple have a daughter together, but were separated and he was living in Berbice. The man turned up at the woman’s house last night and reportedly gained access to the house by jumping the fence but he was unaware that the woman’s son was in the house at the time. When the woman’s son asked him why he was there, he reportedly told the man that he wanted some money to borrow and the man gave it to him.
After leaving the house the suspect went to the woman’s business place where the incident occurred.
Avia was rushed to the hospital where emergency medical attention was administered and the bullet was removed from her hand. She is now recovering.
Avia who is one of the more successful women miners in Bartica had encountered some financial difficulties and is now getting back on her feet. She was also an integral part of the Women Miners Organisation during it’s earlier days with now government Minister Simona Broomes.
 The suspect was apprehended by residents and handed over to the Police. He is currently in custody as the Police investigation continues
