The two aged fifteen (15) and eighteen (18) years old appeared before Magistrate Esther Sam in the Bartica Magistrates’ Court where they charged with the indictable offence of Rape of a Child under 16 years.
The two who were caught and turned into the police by residents were remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre and the Lusignan Prison respectively because of their ages.
According to the police the child was reported missing by her mother. During a search of the area, the child was found naked with visible marks of violence. She was taken to the hospital and an examination conducted revealed that she was sexually assaulted.
The two will make their second court appearance on December 31.
The brutal assault committed on this child comes as Guyana like many countries around the world is observing sixteen days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The international campaign seeks to bring an end to violence against women and girls.
