A City Business is in hot water with the health authorities over the selling of undocumented and expired duck meat.
The department of Public Information yesterday reported that the Guyana Livestock Development Authority and the Ministry of Health confiscated more than 483 pounds of undocumented and expired duck meat from a supplier in the city.
While the name of the business was not revealed by the department, it was said that the items were imported from the United States.
Director of the Veterinary and Public Health Department, Dr. Ozaye Dodson said his department was notified that the expired and undocumented meat was being sold in major supermarkets and that they were not wholesome for human consumption.
Dr. Dodson was quoted by the DPI as saying that his department would have to take steps which include seizure and condemnation, with the aim of showing the populace that they have their safety at heart when it comes to products not produced locally.
The meat seizure was done according to the Animal Health Act and according to Deputy CEO Dr. Dwight Waldrond the Veterinary department will not compromise on the health of the public, as the Animal Health Act is clear and business owners are aware of its content.
The Department said with the Christmas season approaching it will be intensifying its inspections.
