The number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Guyana remains at 183, as the Ministry of Public Health has reported that there are no new cases as of June 19, 2020.

In Friday’s COIVD-19 update Chief Medical Officer, Dr Shamdeo Persaud disclosed of the 183 cases Guyana has recorded 12 deaths and 102 recoveries.

To date, 2,048 persons have been tested for COVID-19 with 1,865 of those yielding negative results.  There are currently 69 active cases in isolation at various facilities across Guyana and 24 persons in institutional quarantine.

Dr. Persaud noted that Regions 1, 4 and 7 are the most affected by the novel coronavirus with the mining community being one of the groups most vulnerable to the virus.

The CMO appealed particularly to residents of Region 7 to adhere to the health guidelines to prevent a spike in positive cases

The Cuyuni -Mazaruni Region notably Aranka, has the second-highest number of confirmed cases; it is a mining community which means that there is continuous movement in and out of the area; this makes it extremely vulnerable for the disease to spread,” Dr. Persuad said.

He reminded persons to continue practising social distancing in the workplace, public spaces, and while using public transportation to reduce the spread of the coronavirus disease. They are also reminded to practise frequent hand washing/sanitising and always wear a face mask if they have to go out.

As of June 19, 2020, the WHO has reported that globally the confirmed cases stand at 8,385,440 with 450,686 deaths. While in the Regions of the Americas, positive cases have reached 4,092,526 with a total of 212,517 deaths.
