Dead is 18 year old Melissa Soman, of Lot 58, Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
According to a police report their enquiries disclosed that on Wednesday, June 17th around 20:30 at Gaettroy Village, Berbice river, Melissa was in the company of a 48-year-old labourer of New Amsterdam, Berbice returning home from a birthday party which was held at Gaettroy Village, in his wooden boat when she related to him that she and her boyfriend were having problems in their relationship after which she suddenly plunged overboard.
The man told police investigators that he immediately went to her rescue but was unable to save her. The Police added that he reportedly raised an alarm and a search party was subsequently formed.
The teen’s body was seen floating on the eastern side of the river in the vicinity of Gaettroy on Thursday, June 18th just around 15:00h.
The body was fished out of the river and it was observed according to the police that her upper portion of her body, her face, and right hand appeared to have been eaten by fish. The body is presently lying at the New Amsterdam Hospital Mortuary, awaiting a post mortem examination. The male from whose boat the victim allegedly plunged, is in custody assisting with the investigation.
