New Amsterdam woman killed in road accident; driver arrested after fleeing crime scene

A 39-year-old woman of Levi’s Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was killed Saturday evening in a road accident, according to police.
The woman has been identified as Raquel Edwards. She was reportedly hit by motor car PNN 3631 which was driven by a 34 -year- old mechanic of Stevedore , South Ruimveldt , Georgetown.
The accident occurred on the Fort Canje Public Road.
Enquiries disclosed that about 20:40 PM, the car which was proceeding east along the northern carriageway of the road reportedly at a fast rate of speed collided with the pedal cyclist whilst negotiating a right bend.
The pedal cyclist who was said to be proceeding in the same direction suddenly turned right into his path and the collision occurred.
As a result of the impact , the cyclist sustained severe injuries about her body ; she was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital in an unconscious state where she succumbed two hours later while receiving medical attention.
Meanwhile , the driver who  fled the scene of the accident was later arrested.
He passed a breathalyzer test and reportedly told investigators that he was visiting relatives and friends when the accident occurred ; he is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
