Escape was short-lived for an inmate who attempted to flee the New Amsterdam Prison this morning. He was recaptured with minutes following swift action by the police ranks on-site.
The inmate, Rei Joseph escaped at around 6:51am and was back in the prison by 7:10am.
In a statement released by the Guyana Prison Service, Superintendent of Prisons (ag) Udistair Holligan, Officer in Charge of the New Amsterdam Prison reported that Joseph made his escaped during the unlocking of the penitentiary.
He jumped over the fence but was observed by ranks in the towers who raised an alarm. The taskforce then pursued Joseph who was recaptured in the Smithfield area.
Joseph is serving 15 months for simple larceny and was set to be released on December 11, 2020.
The matter is under investigation.
Additionally, two prisoners who escaped from the Lusignan Prison remain on the run. They are Kenraul Perez and Ganesh Dhanraj who are both on remand for murder.
