CDC commence hamper distribution to vulnerable communities

The Civil Defence Commission’s (CDC) National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) today commenced distributing food and sanitation items to vulnerable communities throughout Guyana.

The house-to-house exercise will last during the one month of emergency measures implemented by the Ministry of Public Health.

Speaking to DPI, CDC’s Director-General, Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig said the commission’s staff, volunteers, partners, including the Guyana Defence Force and private sector commission are working to ensure there are adequate supplies.

Craig urged Guyanese to be on the lookout and shared the CDC’s strategy to practice social distancing amid the house-to-house distribution.

“The representative of CDC, military personnel and volunteers will blow the horn in front of the homes, and place the supplies at the gates. When we have moved, you can proceed to collect the supplies.”

The first set of supplies will be provided to the most vulnerable communities.

“This house-to-house distribution is very important because people are advised to remain at home. The CDC can provide supplies, especially for those who are unable to work,” the Director-General explained.

These supplies are expected to last through the one-month period. Craig noted that for larger families, CDC will be able to provide additional supplies once they have gathered the numbers.

The commission welcomes support and donations from any companies or individuals who are willing to join this cause.

Interested personnel can make their donations at the CDC’s Headquarters at Thomas Lands, or make cash or cheque deposits into CDC’s Republic Bank account number – 962356519938.

Donations are categorized as food supplies, personal hygiene care, sanitation supplies, and monetary support.

Details on the distribution process, including naming communities, will be released later this evening.
