It is business as usual for many vendors at the Port Mourant market as many on the Corentyne are not adhering to the decision made by the Port Mourant NDC to halt “Saturday market” vending.
The NDC’s decision was guided by the Ministry of Public Health, in its effort to ease the spread of COVID-19 which continues to dominate atleast 180 countries worldwide.
When this newscast visited the market square earlier today, some persons were seen interacting and transacting business with each other without any protective gear and failed to adhere to the social distancing guideline.
It is unclear what step the NDC will take to ensure there is no vending on Saturday at that market which is one of the largest markets on the Corentyne.
Guyana has confirmed 23 cases of the novel Coronavirus with 4 deaths, 149 in home quarantine, 34 in institutional quarantine and 12 persons in isolation.
The Ministry of Health continues to monitor, advise and implement measures to ensure public safety for all its citizens.
The Ministry is asking all members of the general public to cooperate and adhere to the guidelines they have set out as the fight against COVID-19 continues.
