By Farah Bates – A 40- year-old man of Lot 55 Whim, Corentyne Berbice was Tuesday morning charged for causing the death of a 25-year-old motorcyclist on Saturday night last.

The deceased, Shawn Smith of Lot 17 Fingal Street Rose Hall Town, was killed on the Letter Kenny Public Road following a hit and run accident after a motor Lorry driven by Trevor Narine collided with his motorcycle.

Police on the Corentyne were on the ground investigating the matter and they were able to impound the motor lorry which was suspected to be involved in the accident, while the driver was still being sought.

The man was already in the process of repairing the front of the lorry which belongs to a resident of Fyrish Village and then subsequently went into hiding.

However, Narine surrendered and turned himself into the police yesterday in the company of his Attorney at Law, Rohan Jagmohan.

Narine, today appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore at the Springlands’ magistrate court where the charges were read to him.

He was charged for failure to stop at an accident, failure to report an accident and failure to render assistance; however, Narine pleaded not guilty to those charges and was placed on $300,000 bail, he was also asked to lodge his passport with the court and to report twice a week at the Whim Magistrates’ court.

The matter was transferred to the Whim Magistrates’ Court until April 28th.

A Post Mortem examination conducted today on Smith’s body, revealed that the young man died from multiple injuries consistent with that of a motor vehicle accident.
