Furniture maker sentenced to five years in prison for drug trafficking

An East Coast Demerara man was today sentenced to five years in prison and fined in excess of  $200 million for drug trafficking.

The man Azim Baksh better known as Bato of Goed Hope, East Coast Demerara was on trial in the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Alicia George.

Baksh a furniture maker was found guilty of trafficking 200 pounds of cocaine and 123 pounds of marijuana in July last year. For that, he was handed a sentence of five years in prison and fined $221, 621, 520.

 

The Customs Narcotics Unit busted the drug during an operation Mon Repos Sea wall. The drugs were discovered hidden in a boat.

During the trial, the court was told that CANU ranks had observed Baksh and another occupant on the boat with the illegal drugs. It was said that Baksh escaped from the boat but was trailed by officers and arrested.
