Dead is Deonarine also known as Russian, 73, a farmer of Grant Maria’s Delight, lower Pomeroon River. The police in a press release said he was shot once his left side abdomen. The incident occurred around 18:30 hrs, on Friday and was allegedly committed by a masked man who managed to escape.
The entire ordeal was witnessed by a helper who according to reports shared an intimate relationship with the deceased. The 46-year old woman is in custody assisting with the investigation.
The Police said their enquiries revealed that at approximately one hour before the incident, the deceased went to Charity Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast and picked up his female companion and took her to his home.
The two according to the police were sitting at a table when the deceased got up to check who was calling at his front door. It was at the front door that the pensioner was attacked by the suspect who was said to be armed with a “long gun”.
It is said that the woman attempted to disarm the suspect but she instead had a knife drawn at her and pushed to the ground. The deceased attempted to run away from the suspect but was followed and shot. The suspect then fled the scene.
According to the Police, the wounded farmer was rushed to the Charity Hospital by boat but pronounced dead arrival.
The body is presently at the hospital’s mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
