The suspect, Anthony Carmichael, called ‘Strongly’ appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and denied the charge. It is alleged on April 16th within the vicinity of Royal Castle Restaurant on Sheriff Street, Carmicheal had 72.008 kilograms of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. This happened following a sting operation conducted by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit which resulted in a large quantity of compressed marijuana being busted.
Kunyo Sandiford, Custom Anti-narcotics Unit Prosecutor told the court that on the day in question CANU ranks intercepted motorcar PKK 1609 with multiple wrapped packages of marijuana in the back seat and trunk of the vehicle.
Carmichael, who was the driver of the vehicle fled the scene before the drug enforcement officers arrived.
He was arrested in the city by the Police on April, 26th days after a wanted bulletin was issued for him.
The CANU prosecutor objected to the defendant being released on bail on the grounds that he was charged in January for a similar offence before Magistrate Rondel Weaver at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court. He was remanded to prison until May, 18th.
