Three months after the deadly hit and run accident a 48-year-old Bath Settlement West Coast Berbice man was arraigned in court to answer to the charge and he was also hit with three other charges.
Sultan Iyube this morning appeared in the number 51 Magistrates’ court, before magistrate Charlyn Artiga where four charges were read to him. Causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop following an accident, failing to render assistance following an accident and failing to report an accident on the day in question.

The allegations are that on September 17 at number 50 village, Iyube drove motor car PLL 5704 in a manner dangerous to the public and caused the death of 19-year-old Tristan Sahai of #57 Village Corentyne. Iyube was placed on $1M bail and asked to lodge his travel document. He will return to court on December 27.
It was the man’s son-in-law who provided the information to the police almost three months after the accident which took the life of Trishan Sahai also called ‘Star’, 19, of Number 57 Village Corentyne and injured his 28-year-old friend Muneshwar Jairam also called ‘Bodo’ of the same village. This was after he and his wife began experiencing some marital problems. He told the police that it was his father-in-law who was involved in the September 19th hit and run accident at Number 55 Village in front of a bar. Police in Berbice were able to find the car, which was involved in the hit and run accident following that revelation and arrested the driver.
Dead man, Trishan Sahai
One of the persons police immediately arrested was the man’s wife Roshnie Iyube whose name the car is registered in. The woman said that she had no knowledge that her car was involved in a hit and run accident. According to her, she was led to believe that her husband had hit an animal and it was not until six weeks after that the car was fixed. During that time it remained in the garage.
Back in September, a motor car with an unknown registration plate was reportedly speeding north along the Corentyne Highway when the driver struck down Sahai and Jairam who were walking across the Highway at Number 55 Village. Sahai was reportedly flung several feet away from the point of impact while Jairam landed on top of a motorcar that was parked at the time of the accident.
However, the speeding car did not stop. Both men were taken to the Skeldon Hospital where Sahai was pronounced dead and Jairam was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
