Corentyne man remanded to prison for shooting granny and granddaughter

A 25-year-old Corentyne man is now an inmate of the New Amsterdam Prison after being remanded two gun-related crimes.

The man, Suraj Singh of Lot 192 NO. 72 Village, Corentyne appeared at the Whim Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Charlyn Artiga for stealing a gun, unlawfully discharging a loaded firearm with the intent to maim, disfigure or cause actual bodily harm. 

The court heard that Singh between November 22nd and 23rd broke and entered his employer’s house stole his firm arm along with three rounds of ammunition. On the November 26th, 2017, armed with the gun,  Singh broke into a No 72 Village home, where he shot Savatri Hassan and Renuka Hassan.

The accused who went into hiding after the incident told the court that he committed the cowardly as retaliation to the woman’s husband raping his wife.

The twenty-five-year-old will make his second court appearance on January 4, 2018.
