An investigation was launched by the Guyana Fire Service following a massive fire last night which claimed the life of a 43-year-old Corentyne school teacher Tookant Deoaarran

The Guyana Fire Service in a press statement early this morning said it was alerted to a fire at approximately 10:17 hrs on Tuesday at Manager’s Quarters, Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed two buildings were fully engulfed in flames and smoke.

The building of origin of the fire was a one-storey wooden and concrete house owned by 43-year-old Asti Deoaarran of the United States and at the time it was occupied by 43-year-old Tookant Deoaarran.

As a result of the fire, Tookant Deoaarran perished, while the contents and the building were destroyed in the blaze.

Also destroyed was a two-storey wooden and concrete house located in the same compound and in close proximity to the building of origin, a house owned and occupied by a 75-year-old pensioner Ameena Bacchus was destroyed, leaving her homeless.

The fire service according to its statement managed to contain the blaze and extinguish the fire which destroyed the three buildings. Further, the release said investigators attached to the service will continue their investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. The fire service is again calling on citizens to equip their properties with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and smoke alarms as a means safe guarding their properties in the event of a fire.
