Police Corporal Shavon Marks is refuting claims that he escaped lawful custody, while the police were investigating his for the discovery of an AK7 rifle.
In fact, Marks said he is on 14-day sick leave and is currently at home in Berbice.
Marks added that he followed all the standard operating procedures and his leave was issued by a Registered Medical Officer.
His disappearance comes days after the police wrapped up their investigations into the AK47 rifle that was found in a vehicle on Carmichael Street.
The vehicle was reportedly traced from police headquarters after it left the compound with the assault weapon. Marks was placed under close arrest for 72 hours initially and later open arrest.
He said he was told that he can go home and report to the police station every day. Corporal Marks feels he is been penalized because of a confrontation he had with a senior police officer.
Earlier this week Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said the file was completed and the police corporal and the civilian involved are expected to face criminal charges. The Crime Chief also confirmed that the investigators recommended disciplinary charges against the Assistant Superintendent of Police and other ranks who were on duty, on the night in question. It was hours after that statement was made the police discovered that Marks was not at the station.
