Fire Chief acting Kalamadeen Edoo resumed duty this morning two weeks after he was sent on leave by the Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn for his disastrous management of the fire at the Brickdam Police Station.
When contacted by this newscast earlier today, Edoo confirmed that he is back in office as of today. He said he was given three weeks leave which was later reduced to two. He did not say why this occurred. Edoo was sent on leave days after fire flattened more than 80 per cent of the police station.
Many including President Irfaan Ali and senior members of government had levelled the blame at the feet of the fire chief for the poor fire-fighting that was displayed.
During a visit to the St. Stanislaus College where the station’s operations are being temporarily housed, he also voiced his disappointment at how members of the Guyana Fire Service handled the fire.
He said this sort of behaviour cannot and will not be tolerated as he put the Guyana Fire Service on notice. The President posited that this lackadaisical, inefficient, and indifferent approach cannot continue. He also promised that a special team will be put together to investigate the fire service’s response to the fire.
After Edoo was sent on leave, his deputy Gregory Wickham was called out from his vaccination leave to take up the post. It is unclear if Wickham will be allowed to resume his leave now that Edoo is back at work.
