Haiti’s President Jovenel Mosie was assassinated in his home early Wednesday morning. Interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph confirmed Mosie’s death in a statement, saying he died at his residence in Port-au-Prince.
According to the statement, the attack occurred at 1:00 am on Wednesday by a group of unidentified people, which included some Spanish speaking persons. The group attacked the private residence of the President.
It is said that the First Lady, Martine Mosie, was also shot and injured during the early morning attack, she is currently in the hospital being treated.
Joseph in his statement described Mosie’s death as an inhumane and barbaric act, as he called for calm. The 53-year-old Mosie was the father of three.
Mosie who came to power in 2017 has been accused of corruption, which has seen the country faced with many violent protests.
