Weeks after the four convicted prisoners escaped from the Mazaruni Prison two of the four were killed during a shootout with the police at Better Hope Backlands on the East Coast of Demerara.  Dead are Imran Ramsaywack who was sentenced for murder and Ryan Jones, who was serving 28 years in prison on a manslaughter charge. The woman up to news time is still to be identified. According to a police report, ranks of the Guyana Police Force, at approximately 20:40 hrs. yesterday, acting on information, that the Mazaruni Prison escapees were hiding out at a location in the Better Hope South backlands, conducted an operation in what was described as an abandoned, bushy and swampy field.

The police report added that ranks observed three wooden shacks in the field with two partly constructed ones. The Police ranks began clearing the first shack but no one was seen. As the ranks were approaching the second shack, a voice was heard in the third shack and the ranks immediately identified themselves. A male immediately emerged and discharged a round at the Police and then ran. The Police ranks returned fire. Two males and a female were wounded and lay in the shack with gunshot injuries, whilst one male escaped.

A sawn-off double barrel shotgun was found at the scene. The Police investigations are ongoing.
