Guyana’s Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand at a press conference on Monday said all students attending dormitory schools across Guyana will be tested for COVID-19. Now, this announcement comes hours after eight students at President’s College tested positive for COVID-19.
Four of the 8 students are from a Region 8 community.
The discovery came following the students return to their dormitory to resume face to face classes.
Schools across the country opened their doors to 4th to 6 form students and some 20,000 students were expected back in the classroom.
According to the Minister, the level of interaction between students residing in the dormitories would be more than those attending other schools.
The Education Minister noted that there has been close collaboration with the Ministry of Health to ensure all COVID-19 protocols are followed in the event a student contracts COVID-19.
The Ministry of Education said all COVID-19 measures are in place at schools across the country. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education have been collaborating to ensure that all COVID-19 guidelines are followed in the event a student contracts COVID-19.
Schools were closed in March this year, after Guyana recorded its first COVID-19 death.
